Microbiology

The microbiology laboratory at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics is a full-service laboratory accredited by the College of American Pathologists. Services include aerobic and anaerobic bacteriology, susceptibility testing, mycology, parasitology, and virology. Molecular diagnostic testing is available for sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea and chlamydia), Clostridium difficile, enteroviruses, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and respiratory viruses. 16S rDNA PCR and sequencing is available for identification of unusual bacteria from cultures and from direct clinical specimens. Information related to special test requests and proper specimen collection and transportation should be directed to the section manager and/or medical director.
