Clinical Pathology
Laboratory Medicine services are provided by faculty at the UW Hospital and Clinics (UWHC). UWHC Clinical Laboratories are a comprehensive provider of over 3.8 million laboratory tests annually. Nearly 300 technical and professional staff provide support to clinical areas ranging from transplant to emergency medicine to pediatrics. Our laboratories play an essential role in the quality and safety of patient care by providing accurate diagnostic and treatment information to caregivers and patients.
Department faculty provide professional direction and subspecialty expertise in all areas of clinical diagnosis and laboratory medicine. In addition, faculty provide oversight and advisory support to decentralized laboratory testing areas, clinical and industrial trials, and medical consulting. Faculty continue to be a leaders in innovation for the laboratory industry in areas such as laboratory automation, quality control, information technology, new instrumentation and methodology and are at the forefront of development in molecular diagnostics.
Anatomic Pathology
Anatomic Pathology services are provided by board certified pathologists in the areas of:

- Cytopathology
- Hematopathology
Our state of the art laboratory processes over 45,000 surgical specimens and 30,000 cytologies, including 2,000 fine needle aspirations per year. Areas of subspecialization include:
- Breast and gynecologic pathology
- Cytopathology including gynecologic, body fluids, and fine needle aspiration
- Dermatopathology
- Gastrointestinal and liver pathology
- Genitourinary pathology
- Neuropathology including muscle and nerve
