Hematopathology

The Hematopathology Service provides diagnostic pathology services for suspected hematologic disorders of blood, bone marrow, lymph node and other tissues for all patients of all ages. The service is focused on integrating clinical, morphology and lab data with ancillary specialized studies such as immunophenotyping and cytogenetics, to make a diagnosis. The service sees about 1300 bone marrows, 300 lymph node specimens and 600 flow cytometry samples a year in addition to cases from outside institutions sent for pathology review, and blood smears, body fluids and other samples referred from the clinical hematology lab.

The service is staffed by three pathologists, Dr. Catherine Leith, Erik Ranheim and David Yang, all with subspecialty fellowship training and certification in hematopathology, and with over 40 years combined hematopathology experience. Drs. Ranheim and Yang, as experts in lymphoma pathology, are pathology reviewers for lymphoma studies by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.

Services Offered

Diagnostic evaluation of peripheral blood smears, bone marrow aspirates, lymph nodes and other specimens with suspected hematologic disorders. Appropriate ancillary testing such as flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular studies are performed as appropriate in consultation with the referring physician.

Stand alone flow cytometry studies for evaluation of suspected acute leukemia, chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), as well as T and B-cell subset analysis are available.
